Alice Baddiley, a poem by her Father
At half past four this afternoon
our Alice came in crying.
I thought she'd got in pretty soon
as if she had been flying.
She cannot run, she cannot bike
it isn't skating season.
But Alice never hurries home
unless she has a reason.
Her mother asked her what was up
was she attacked by cancer?
But Alice was too full for words
at least she didn't answer!
She wasn't full of pudding no
her eyes were wet and red.
She hadn't choked herself with tuts
nor eaten too much bread.
How then she came straight home from school
in such a sorry style.
I'll tell you folks but keep it dark
she slipped upon a tile.
The teacher was so sorry
she ran and picked her up.
And sent another little girl
for water in a cup.
The cup was cracked and Alice slipped
and swore that it was tainted.
She bit her lip to ease the pain
and then she promptly fainted.
When she'd come round a little bit
she shouted out for Peg.
To come and take her home at once
'cos she had hurt her leg.
But Peggy couldn't hear her
so like a little fairy.
She had to come along the road
a holding on to Mary.
She sat upon her mother's knee
by jove that girl is mustard.
She limped about and pulled a face
then gobbled Alan's custard.
She'd had her eye on it all day
and asked for it at lunch.
And so she set her wits to work
and soon she got a hunch.
That if she faked an illness
got Alan sitting pretty.
Then asked him for the custard
he'd give it out of pity.
She's full of little tricks like that
and anyone would swear it.
She keeps her brains beneath her hat
And so she doesn't wear it.
Next time she pulls a stunt like this
I'll not be such a fool.
To listen to the BLINKING TRASH
that comes from Melbourne School.
Narrative
Worked at the stocking factory in Melbourne, Moved from the north east when she was two years old, As soon as they went into the house on arrival, she rushed upstairs and opened the airing cupboard door. A cat promptly jumped out and frightened Alice who has never liked cats since!
They lived at Morley when David was due to be born and Granny and Grandad wouldn't let her stay out in the wilds for the birth, so insisted she stayed with them at Kings Newton!
Narrative
Suffered when young from Scrofula (Scrophula or Struma) which refers to a variety of skin diseases; in particular, a form of tuberculosis, affecting the lymph nodes. It is usually spread by unpasteurized cow's milk; and is most common in children. The word comes from the Latin scrofulae.
Didn't start school until aged 7 because of it and still has a scar on her neck where it was treated - the doctor would rub antiseptic onto it and then lance it
